Program Description
Need a fun way to get your weekend started? Join host Julie Schulte for a journey down Straight Street, featuring the best Soul, Gospel and Rhythm & Blues. You could be dancing to Wilson Picket or James Brown. Or singing along with a soulful ballad by Aretha Franklin, Candi Staton or Otis Redding. Need a bit of spiritual uplifting? Listen in for Dorothy Love Coates or The Blind Boys of Alabama.

Music from the late 1950's to the early 1970's is featured, but you also might hear music from current soul artists like Raphael Saadiq or Curtis Salgado thrown in just for good measure!

What is Soul Music?
Soul music grew out of churches in this country. It can be hard to come up with a clear definition. I like this quote from Milt Jackson in "Nowhere to Run: The Story of Soul Music" (by Gerri Hirshey):

Soul "is what comes from within; it's what happens when the inner part of you comes out.... " Jackson believes that what he heard in church influenced his funky style.   "The music I heard was open, relaxed, impromptu – soul music."

So, it's perfect that Straight Street features the gospel roots along with the soul that grew out of gospel.  A bit of funk and R&B adds a little spice to the mix.

About Your Host
Beginning with bluegrass (!) in 1975, continuing with a bit of classical in college and including a 10-year stint as a blues deejay, Julie has been involved with radio since she was a teenager. She thanks Steve Helwig for introducing her to soul music, and is excited to be continuing a long tradition of great music on Straight Street.
