The Bureau of Land Management is in the scoping stages of a proposed logging project east of Eugene near the town of Vida.
 
The McKenzie Project includes up to 18 hundred acres of forest land that's managed under the 1937 O & C Act. Kristine Struck is with BLM's Eugene District office.
 
Struck: "The O & C act does call for a sustainable timber harvest. But in our evaluation and our project development we can conduct our timber activities in compliance with the Northwest Forest Plan."
 
The Northwest Forest Plan requires public timber projects to protect endangered species habitat. Struck says her agency is surveying the land for wildlife and sensitive riparian areas. She says the trees vary in age from 50 to more than 100 years old. The project calls for a mix of thinning and regeneration harvests. Conservation groups are dubious about the project since they say regeneration is another word for clear-cutting.
 
There is a public meeting on the Mckenzie Project Thursday evening at 6 at the McKenzie Fire and Rescue Building in Leaburg. BLM is accepting written comments until October 17^th.
